Yorkshire Day 2025: Whatâs it all about?
Yorkshire Day, held every year on 1st August, is all about celebrating what makes this supercounty special. It was first started in 1975 by the Yorkshire Ridings Society, and the date was chosen because it ties in with a few historic moments.
One is the Battle of Minden, when Yorkshire soldiers picked white roses to remember their fallen comrades. Itâs also the anniversary of the abolition of slavery across the British Empire, something championed by Yorkshire MP William Wilberforce.
The big civic celebration is organised by The Yorkshire Society and rotates each year to a different town or city. For 2025, Bradford and Ilkley are co-hosting, which is a first. Itâs a good fit too, with Bradford being the UKâs City of Culture this year, and Ilkley the home of the unofficial Yorkshire anthem.
The civic event will include a service, a street parade with Mayors and councillors in full regalia, and a formal lunch. But itâs not just for dignitaries â both towns are planning wider community events to help everyone get involved. Check our event list for celebrations in places like Ilkley, Wakefield and Batley across the weekend.
